There will be cherry blossoms, wisteria and azaleas blooming around Sakai.

Children’s Day Decorations at Traditional Townhouse Museums

The Old Gunsmith Workshop and Residence, Seigakuin and the Yamaguchi Residence will display samurai armors that have been handed down for generations. The Yamaguchi Residence will also be decorated by a big carp streamer that is hand-painted by a craft master designated by Osaka prefecture.
Exhibition Period: May 1st ~ 27th, 10:00-17:00 (last entrance 16:30)

Workshop at Yamaguchi Residence

Dates: May 3rd (Friday, public holiday)
Contents: Painting a carp streamer
Time: 10:30~, 13:30~ (each session will take around 1 hour)
Capacity: 6 people per session (first-come first served)
Fee: 1000 yen plus admission (200 yen)

Sakai Knife Festival

This popular event will take place this year again!

Date/time: April 13th ~14th, 10:00-16:00
Admission: free
Venue: Sakai Industrial Promotion Center (nearby Nakamozu station)

● Exhibition and on-the-spot sale of Sakai knives

● Fish fillet lesson (only on the 13th from 10:30 and 13:30, fee charging)

● Knife sharpening (fee-charging, until 14:00 on the 13th and 12:00 on the 14th - fee-charging)

● Traditional metal tempering performance (for handcrafted knife making) on both days at 10:30 and 13:30

● Daikon radish peeling competition, on both days 11:00-13:00

There will also be food trucks and events at the Children Square.

Foreign Language Picture Books

There is an exhibition of picture books donated by Soroptimist International of Sakai last year.

After the exhibition has ended, from May the 1st, you may borrow the books. This time we have a lot of Chinese books. Other than this exhibition, in Sakai City libraries we have picture books in English, Chinse, Korean, Vietnamese, Tagalog and more. Why don’t you take this opportunity to read picture books to your children in the language of your own country?

Naniwa Honzome (chusen) Exhibition and Sale

In Naka Ward Office, there is a Naniwa Honzome (traditional hand-dyeing) exhibition. You can purchase the articles on the 17th and 18th and on the 18th there is also a tie-dyeing workshop called 'sekka shibori'.

Azaleas at the Asakayama Greenway

Around 2500 azalea bushes will reach peak bloom around late April. You can leisurely walk along the 600m walkway while enjoying the flowers! Did you know that the azalea is Sakai City’s official flowering bush? Visit the Flower Calendar page for more information.

International Women’s Sumo Invitational Championship, Sakai

Day of Competition: April 7th, 10:00-16:00
Venue: Sumo Stadium, Ohama Park
Athletes from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Thailand are set to participate. Come and directly see the intense action!
