Sakai Ward

Surrounded by trees, this beautiful 35.6-hectare park stretches between Nintoku-tenno-ryo Kofun and Richu-tenno-ryo Kofun and features wide, grassy areas, ponds, and a variety of tree species. It serves as a symbol of Sakai and is a popular destination for residents seeking rest and relaxation.

As you pass through the Japanese Garden's cypress gate, its 26,000 square meters of beauty unfold before you. Visitors can enjoy beautiful ponds and streams, a variety of elegant structures, and countless flowers in all their seasonal beauty as they stroll through the garden.
Hours: April to October 9:00 to 17:00 (gates close at 16:30)
November to March 9:30 to 16:30 (gates close at 16:00)
Closed: Monday (Tuesday when Monday is a holiday) and New Year's holidays
Admission: Adults 200 yen, children 100 yen. Free for pre-schoolers, adults over 65 and those with disabilities (identification needed).

Flower Viewing

Mid to end of April is the ideal time to view the 500 peony plants. You can admire the peony pots exhibition inside the large traditional Japanese house and at the Chinese Shangri-la Togendai garden, peonies planted outside. The gorgeous red, pink, white and yellow peonies proudly signal the arrival of spring.

Ohama Park

Originally named Umihama Park when it was first built in 1879, Ohama Park today comprises a 16-hectare relaxation space with easily accessible facilities including a baseball field, swimming pool, gym, sumo wrestling hall, and a monkey island.

Wisteria at Ohama Park

Ohama Park is known for its wisteria. Within this park there are 3 areas with wisteria pergolas, and the one that is located north to a monkey breeding cage was planted when Ohama Park was established in 1879, so its over 140 years old.
From late April, when the flowers start blooming, it produces clusters of white flowers around 25cm in length. There are 2 other wisteria pergolas with light purple-coloured flowers.

Using the Old Sakai Lighthouse located nearby as a motif, the arena aims to revitalize and “light up” Ohama Park. It boasts an arena which can hold up to 3000 people and a new budokan hall dedicated to martial arts, such as judo and kendoOf course, there are still regular gymnasium facilities available for personal use, starting from 500 yen per visit for adults.

International Women’s Sumo Invitational Championship, Sakai

Day of Competition: April 7th, 10:00-16:00

Venue: Sumo Stadium, Ohama Park

Athletes from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Thailand are set to participate. Come and directly see the intense action!

Ocean Fureai Plaza

Located in the middle of Osaka Bay, Sakaihama is currently the target of a multistage construction project. Ocean Fureai Plaza opened in October 2000 on the western edge of the project. Built as the first step in creating a green environment, the facility is a futuristic one whose character changes as its plant life develops over time. On clear days, the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is visible in the distance, and the Plaza lets visitors experience an open, spacious feeling as well as the smell of the sea.

Naka Ward

This park boasts a full-fledged skateboard park suitable for beginners through to advanced skaters, and opens till late. The Baraike Baseball Stadium (Kurazushi Stadium) is located here and there is also a barbeque area that can be used even in rainy weather.

Higashi Ward

Shirasagi Park

Located at Tajima Pond (one of the city's retention reservoirs) and along its waterway, Shirasagi Park includes an iris garden, a sports plaza, a baseball field, and a toddler play area. The park is widely used by Sakai's children, adults, and senior citizens alike.

Nishi Ward

Hamadera Park

At the time it became Osaka Prefecture's first officially designated park in 1873, Hamadera Park was widely known for the beauty of its white sand and blue pine trees. Today the park continues to enjoy popularity as a place to relax amid natural beauty including those famous pine trees and its rose gardens, and it now offers modern recreational facilities including baseball and softball fields and tennis courts. During the summer, spray erupts from its swimming pool and waterslide. About 70 meters north of the park's main entrance is a monument inscribed with a poem commemorating the first meeting of Yosano Akiko with her husband Yosano Tekkan.

Rose Garden

In May the roses in Hamadera park bloom proudly and beautifully.
From wild roses that are native to Japan to the modern rose, you can enjoy 6,000 rose trees of 500 different varieties!

Minami Ward

Nishihara Park

Famous for its cherry blossom viewing, Nishihara Park bustles with flower viewers in the spring. Japanese red pine trees grow near the pond, creating a relaxing natural landscape. Visitors enjoy sports and walking in the park while keeping in close contact with the pleasures of the seasons, including the fresh, green growth of spring, the shade of summer, the changing colors of fall, and the tree's bare canopies during winter.

Sakai Nature Forest

Situated on a 17.2-hectare mountain with a lush natural environment, Sakai Nature Forest invites visitors to explore the possibilities of a new relationship between people and the mountains that surround their communities through a forest-themed program whose elements include playing, farming, learning, eating, and hiking. The facility also works with the Ichin Club (one of the city's volunteer organizations) to offer an "Experience Your Local Mountain" Program (reservations required) that includes nature observation gatherings, craft lessons, farming experiences, forest management, and other events. The Forest is also home to the Forest Center, a facility where other mountain-related programs and environmental classes are held.

Kozen Park

With a land mass of 17 thousand square- meters, this vast park is known for its plum trees. Currently there are about 50 species and a total of 1,400 plum trees. The best time to see the blossoms is between mid-February to early March. Nearby there is Tajihayahime shrine, of which main hall was built in the 16th century and is designated as a National Important Cultural Property.

Kita Ward

Oizumi Ryokuchi Park

Created in accordance with a 1972 policy of preserving forested space in 9 designated cities of the future and today incorporating about 95 hectares, Oizumi Ryokuchi Park is a large, forested park with 320,000 trees. Evergreen, deciduous, and flowering trees exist in near-natural surroundings along with many wild birds and insects. Also popular is the Fureai Garden, a barrier-free area where visitors can experience flowers by their color, sound, and fragrance. The park is well loved by Sakai's citizens, whose commitment to maintain and expand the park is reflected in their enthusiastic participation in voluntary maintenance programs.

Mihara Ward

Mihara Furusato Park

Mihara Furusato Park focuses on the Kawachi tradition of metal casting, which is a noted heritage of Mihara-ku. There are monuments created from metal casts located throughout the park in an effort to bring the superb casting technique of the Kawachi to life for current and future generations. The park has a historic feel, with a fountain based on the processes used to make castings and a sundial that serves as a monument to time located on one of the garden's miniature mountains.

Funatoike Park

Located in central Mihara-ku, Funatoike Park features a variety of flowering trees including Japanese cinnamon, Japanese blue oak, and chinquapin. Funatoike is also home to wild birds such as white and grey herons, making it a popular spot for bird-watching.
