JYONOYAMA

JYONOYAMA KOFUN

Location Mozunishino-cho 1, Kita-ku

Jyonoyama Kofun is a 77 meters long keyhole-shaped burial mound facing west.
During the Muromachi period a castle was once placed on the mound. Drastically altered shape of the mound, most likely because of the construction of the castle, was revealed at the time of demolition sometime between 1950 and 1955. While being demolished, an urgent excavation was conducted, and a pit-style stone chamber made of andesite was discovered.
The chamber was rather narrow as it measured 6.7 meters long and 1.5 meters wide. The artifacts found inside the chamber include swords, socketed iron spearheads, iron arrowheads, cuirasses and comma-shaped beads. In addition, Sue ware was unearthed from the front square portion.

The mound had been damaged sometime during the years of 1951-1954, and the structure had already been badly altered when an excavation was performed as an emergency measure. A pit-like stone room made of chipped andesite (a type of lava rock) was discovered in the rear circular portion. The long, narrow stone room measures 6.7 meters high and 1.5 meters wide.

Items excavated from within the stone room include the remains of a three-panel mirror made of clay, parts for saddles, metal parts, swords and various weapons, arrowheads and many other items. Earthenware vessels were also found within the square portion of the burial mound.
