The city of Wellington is the capital of New Zealand, and the center of the nation's politics and culture. It is also known as the southernmost capital city in the world. Development of the relationship
In 1992 on the eve of the establishment of direct flights from New Zealand to Kansai International Airport, the City of Wellington made known its desire to establish a sister city relationship with Sakai, a city whose advantages it described as a close proximity to Kansai International Airport, a long and distinguished history, and its status as one of the Kansai region's greatest cities. The sister city relationship was formalized in 1994.

A beautiful port city surrounded by the sea and characterized by hilly terrain, Wellington is located at the bottom of New Zealand's North Island. In 1865 it replaced Auckland as the nation's capital. It is home to many cultural attractions such as art and other museums, and a large number of cultural organizations use Wellington as a base for their operations.
