The city of Berkeley is located halfway down the coastline of California State in the United States. It is a city which has advanced-level education, culture, and a liberal atmosphere within the University of California, Berkeley Campus as its core.
The population is approximately 100,000, and the land area is 27 square kilometers.

Development of the relationship

The mayors of Sakai and Berkeley met at the seventh Japan/U.S. Mayoral and Chamber of Commerce Head Conference held in Kobe in the fall of 1963. Students from Osaka Prefecture University visiting the University of California at Berkeley later carried a message to the mayor of Berkeley from the mayor of Sakai, and the sister city relationship was formalized in 1967.

Located on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay, Berkeley is a college town known for its liberal atmosphee, international flavor, beautiful setting, and mild climate. In addition to the well-known University of California, Berkley (UCB), the city features world-class laboratories, research institutes, schools, libraries, art museums, theaters, a botanical garden, a rose garden, stadiums, and a yacht harbor.
