Sakai City Tax Facts

In Japan, taxes can be classified into national taxes and local taxes, which are respectively paid to the national government and to your residing prefecture and city.

Local taxes are as follows.

Municipal Inhabitant Tax (shimin zei 市民税) is paid to the municipality where your address is registered as of January 1 each year and calculated based on the previous year's income.
Prefectural Inhabitant Tax (fumin zei 府民税) is the same. Municipal Inhabitant Tax and Prefectural Inhabitant Tax are paid together.
Please declare your income and deductible expenses by March 15 every year at the designated declaration venue set up at a ward office. You don’t have to do so if your employer submits your “Salary Payment Report” (kyuyo shiharai hokokusho 給与支払報告書) or if you file your tax return (kakuteishinkoku 確定申告) at the tax office (zeimusho 税務署).

Fixed property tax is collected from the owners of land, houses and other depreciable assets in the city as of 1 January each year.

Light vehicle tax is collected from the owner of motorbike or light motor vehicle (four-wheel and up to 660cc) as of April 1 each year.

Please pay your taxes by the due date through the following means:
・At the counter of a post office or bank
・By Internet banking (a bill with Pay-easy mark necessary.)
・At a convenience store (a bill with a barcode necessary.)
・By mobile payment app (a bill with a QR code necessary.)
・By bank account transfer (pre-application necessary.)
・Through the website for local tax payment (a bill with a QR code necessary.Credit cards are accepted as well.)

If you need a tax certificate, such as Tax Payment Certificate (nozei shomeisho 納税証明書) or Income Certificate (shotoku/kazei shomeisho 所得・課税証明書), please apply at a ward office’s Civic Affairs Division (shiminka 市民課) with your Residence Card (zairyu card 在留カード) or other ID.
