<Mystery No.4 What existed inside kofun?> Mortuary goods
It seems that not only the dead body, but also a variety of items was placed inside a burial facility. It is said that gold-plated armors, glass vessels and iron swords are among mortuary goods discovered inside the stone chamber found at the front square part of Nintoku-tennno-ryo Kofun. Depending on the period, different items were buried with the dead. Around the early Kofun period, bronze mirrors, copper arrowheads and stone-made imitation of shell bracelets were used as brave goods. Around the mid-Kofun period when Mozu Kofungun was constructed, ironware, such as armors arrowheads, swords and agricultural tools, were buried. Numerous gold-plated horse-trappings and Sue ware were unearthed from kofun of later period. You see items valued and employed as mortuary goods according to the time.
Among Mozu Kofungun, a large number of ironware was unearthed from Otsukayama Kofun, and at the city’s Kurohimeyama Kofun, many armors were excavated as well.
