【4th Thematic Exhibition】Old Gunsmith Workshop and Residence

The Old Gunsmith Workshop and Residence is Japan‘s one and only existing example of its kind that has survived from the Edo-period (17th-19th century) and the buildings are designated as Tangible Cultural Properties of Sakai City.

Restoration work was carried out from 2020 to 2023. The buildings were partially dismantled and restored to its state in the late 19th century (from the end of the Edo to the Meiji period), when the “last Sakai gunsmith” Inoue Sekiemon Hisatsugu, the 11th head of the Inoue family, was active. Excavations have also uncovered archaeological features such as forging furnaces.

The exhibition displays drawings showing the changes in the site and buildings, as well as old materials and artifacts found during the restoration and excavation works, and introduces the charm and value of the historic buildings that have been revitalized as cultural assets to be passed onto future generations.

On the occasion of this thematic exhibition focusing on architecture, we offer English guided tours of the Edo-period gunsmith’s buildings. Let us explore a Japanese traditional townhouse and experience authentic craftsmanship and the unique history and culture of Sakai!
