GREETING

Osami Takeyama, Mayor of Sakai City

Osami Takeyama, Mayor of Sakai City

The 21st century is expected to be ‘The Century of Peace and Human Rights’. However, we are still living in a world widely menaced by conflict, poverty, hunger, the spread of disease and human-rights violations, all of which threaten the lives and dignity of many people.

Preserving fundamental human rights and building a peaceful society are principles acknowledged in the Constitution of Japan and in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. As members of the global community, we are obliged to take an interest in the diverse and recurrent challenges faced around the world and strive towards achieving world peace.

This year we are pleased to hold The 4th SAKAI Peace Contribution Award Ceremony to honor those devoted to promoting peace in the Asia Pacific region. We sincerely hope that in doing so we may also spread recognition of the importance of world peace, and establish Sakai as a local authority known for its contribution towards a peaceful society.

The award recipients have distinguished themselves in their tireless efforts in confronting various issues both at home and abroad. Today, I am delighted that so many people have gathered to celebrate their great achievements.

The City of Sakai, through this award program, will continue in its commitments to support peace activists and organizations who make contributions to the respect for human rights, and to work towards the ultimate realization of global peace.

Lastly, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the screening committee members, The Asahi Shimbun, and all others who have made The 4th SAKAI Peace Contribution Award possible, and humbly request your continuing support.
