Shichikanyama Tumulus (Shichikan Tumulus) is a round tomb which existed to the north of the round rear part of Richuryo Tumulus (Ishizugaoka Tumulus) and is considered to be a subordinate burial mound of the latter.
The burial mound had a dual-layer construction with a diameter of about 56 meters and about 8 meters high. It was also surrounded by a moat. The mound was covered with stones and included clay images or haniwa, while the top seems to have been surrounded by a line of cylindrical haniwa with fins.
Representational haniwa such as houses, short armor or Tanko, parasols, and quiver shapes were also unearthed. There was a wide variety of excavated artifacts, including iron suits of armor, iron ring-pommeled swords, single-edged iron swords, serpentine-shaped swords, double-edged iron swords, iron pikes, iron arrowheads, iron axes, adzes, spearhead planes, gold and copper belt ornaments, and harnesses. In addition, talc comma-shaped stones or talc Magatama, and sword-shaped iron hardware were also collected.
The remains from the excavation are mostly iron weapons and arms. As many as 7 keeled helmets, 6 or more Tanko, 130 or so single-edged iron swords, and well over a hundred iron arrowheads were found. Those excavated articles are vital materials to estimate the Richuryo Tumulus period.
