JYO-NO-YAMA TUMULUS

Located approximately 500 meters north of the Nisanzai Tumulus, this site has now been made a burial mound park called the Jyo-No-Yama Park. At first glance, it appears to be nothing more than a mound of earth, but until 1955 the ditch of the dried moat was as clearly visible as the dividing lines of a rice field.

Originally, the burial mound's front square portion faced west and the mound was scallop-shaped; however, due to a Land Division Reorganization Project in 1968, the mound's shape changed drastically. Later, based on the results of the excavation, it was restored and preserved as a park.

The mound's overall length is 69 meters and the diameter of the rear circular portion is 53 meters. It stands 7 meters high and the front square portion has a width of 29 meters. The existence of stone buttresses and clay figures has been confirmed.

When the front square portion of the mound was being stripped away, a mass of clay was found in the center of the burial mound.

It is said that this might possibly have been the burial chamber.
