ITASUKE TUMULUS

This keyhole-shaped burial mound lies approximately in the center of the Mozu Tumulus Group with its front square portion facing west. The size of the mound ranks it 8th largest in the group with an overall length of 146 meters. The diameter of the rear circular portion is roughly 90 meters and the height roughly 12.2 meters. The width of the front square portion is approx. 99 meters with a height of 11.1 meters and has a three-tiered construction. The southern part is constructed with a protruding area attached to the sides.

Stone buttresses and clay figures were found, and a clay image of a Japanese war helmet was excavated from the back circular portion of the mound. Because of the position of the southern edge of the mound, a high embankment has been constructed at the south end of the moat.

The Japanese war helmet that was excavated from the burial mound has become the symbol of Sakai City's commitment to the preservation of cultural assets.
