AKAYAMA TUMULUS
Location
Mozunishino-cho 1, Sakai City

This circular burial mound was located near the main gate of the Sakai City Mozu Nursing School in Mozunishinocho. Damaged long ago, it was not known exactly where the burial mound was located until 1973, when several clay figures were uncovered during road construction. Construction was halted and an excavation was performed leading to confirmation of the shape, scale and location of the mound. At the time of excavation, two-thirds of the mound had already disappeared, but they were at least able to determine the diameter (approx. 20 meters) and the height (approx. 2 meters).
On the eastern edge of the mound is a small, extended area of 2.2 meters in length sectioned off by a row of clay figures, but no remnants of the main portion of the tomb were found. The bottom slope of the mound is encircled by a row of clay figures and there are clay shapes scattered about inside, as well. The mound also had stone buttresses. Excavated from within the extended area were clay figures of houses, horses and a earthenware jar.
