Tanegashima
Our interchange with this island community began with the musket as a common part of our history. Tanegashima has a municipality, Nishinoomote, and two townships, Nakatane and Minamitane, with the circumference of 166 kilometers. The island has a population of 35,500, a land area of 454 square kilometers and a subtropical climate. Main products include sugar cane, sweet potatoes, peanuts, tobacco, lobsters and liquor.

The friendship city relationship with this village in Nara Prefecture began with their gift to Sakai of some firefly larvae. 95% of this beautiful village is covered with Yoshino cedar.
This village has a population of 3,100 and a land area of 132 square kilometers.
