Itasuke Tumulus: Symbolizing the importance of preserving cultural properties

Itasuke Tumulus consists of a keyhole-shaped mound 146 meters in length in close proximity to several smaller tumuli thought to be baicho (smaller mounds located near major tumuli). The site is thought to have been constructed during the middle or late fifth century. In 1955 a preservation campaign orchestrated by local residents saved the site from demolition.
A helmet excavated from Itasuke Tumulus serves as the symbol of Sakai City’s efforts to preserve its cultural properties.
