Mozuno, Sakai
The kofun tumuli constructed here in ancient times still stand today after some 1,500 years, a testament to an era when a tumulus-building culture flowered in Japan.
At this site close to Osaka Bay, a keyhole-shaped tumulus of unprecedented scale was constructed. Together with surrounding small and medium-size tumuli it forms a tumulus cluster of breathtaking variety.
Each of these tumuli constitutes an invaluable historical legacy that conveys an understanding of an earlier time in Japanese history. Together, as world-class cultural heritages, they represent one page in Japan’s long history.
Sakai City is working to register the Mozu Tumulus Cluster as a World Heritage site in order to ensure that its legacy is protected for future generations and utilized in the area’s city planning.
